Advancing Shark Science Through Monitoring, Field Research And Conservation
SHARK SCIENCE AND OCEAN RESEARCHPROTECT OUR SHARKS. SAVE OUR OCEAN.
NeuralFin is a shark science and ocean research institution dedicated to advancing the understanding, monitoring, and protection of sharks through field research, scientific monitoring, conservation, education, and technology. Through Shark ID AI, its flagship scientific platform, NeuralFin supports individual identification, long-term catalogue development, and research-driven monitoring as part of a broader mission to strengthen shark science, improve conservation outcomes, and deepen public understanding of the marine environments on which these species depend.
LIVE IDENTIFICATION AND MONITORING
IDENTIFY AND TRACK SHARKS OVER TIME
Upload shark observations, identify individuals, and build long-term sighting records through Shark ID AI. Designed to support shark science and ocean research, the platform helps transform images into structured monitoring data that can strengthen catalogue development, improve individual recognition, and support longitudinal research across sites, species, and time.
WHAT IS SHARK ID AI?
Shark ID AI is a biometric identification system designed to support the recognition of individual sharks from photographic encounters through the analysis of stable visual characteristics. Developed for use in shark science, conservation, and long-term monitoring, the platform applies image-based pattern recognition to derive an individual identity signature from features such as fin morphology, natural markings, and body patterning. In doing so, it enables repeated encounters to be evaluated within a consistent analytical framework, allowing photographic observations to contribute to individual re-identification, catalogue continuity, and the development of longitudinal records that are more useful for scientific monitoring than isolated sightings alone.
By providing a non-invasive method for individual recognition at scale, Shark ID AI is intended to overcome the practical limitations of manual photo-matching and exclusive reliance on physical tagging. Rather than treating each image as a standalone observation, the system supports the structured comparison of new encounters against existing records, returning match assessments with associated confidence measures and image-based evidence. This allows repeated observations to accumulate into a more coherent evidence base for tracking occurrence across time and space, strengthening the capacity to study site fidelity, movement, encounter history, and other patterns relevant to shark research and conservation.
NeuralFin is a shark science and ocean research organisation established to strengthen the understanding, monitoring, and protection of sharks through field research, conservation, education, and scientific systems development. Its work is grounded in the recognition that effective shark science depends not only on individual observations, but on the capacity to generate structured, longitudinal evidence that can support ecological interpretation, population monitoring, and more informed conservation decision-making over time. Within that broader institutional framework, Shark ID AI functions as one enabling research platform rather than the totality of the organisation’s identity, supporting catalogue continuity, repeated identification, and data-informed monitoring as part of a wider scientific purpose. NeuralFin’s approach is therefore not simply technological, but methodological and research-led, combining scientific inquiry, field-based observation, and controlled data stewardship to build stronger evidence for shark science while respecting the integrity, confidentiality, and governance expectations that serious research and conservation partnerships require.
